Job Opportunity: Subject Matter Expert – NATO Concept Development

Ironclad Defense Works (IDW), a leader in innovative defense solutions, is seeking highly qualified Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support NATO’s Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (HQ SACT) in the initiation and research of emerging NATO concepts.
About the Role
This contract opportunity involves supporting the NATO Concept Development and Experimentation (CD&E) methodology to deliver high-profile strategic concepts aligned with NATO’s evolving priorities. The initial contract runs from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025, with potential extensions through 2027.
The position involves:
- Managing and coordinating research, analysis, and experimentation efforts.
- Developing deliverables for the initiation and research phases of NATO concept development, culminating in the Initial Concept V 0.1 by the end of 2025.
- Facilitating workshops, conducting stakeholder analyses, and designing comprehensive development and experimentation plans.
Key Responsibilities
- Concept Management:
- Coordinate and synchronize project deliverables, ensuring quality and timely execution.
- Conduct stakeholder engagement and workshop facilitation.
- Research and Development:
- Develop and execute research and experimentation plans.
- Analyze and present findings through clearly written reports and presentations.
- Support Strategic Deliverables:
- Deliver concept proposals, metrics for performance, and research-based solutions to address capability gaps.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Master’s degree in political studies, international affairs, security/defense/war studies, or equivalent military education (e.g., Command and Staff College).
- Alternatively, 5 years of professional experience in concept development or related fields.
- Experience:
- At least 5 years managing research or innovation projects.
- Practical knowledge of the NATO CD&E methodology or equivalent.
- Familiarity with integrating operational analysis into military planning through experiments or war games.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong written communication skills to convey complex subjects effectively.
- Language Proficiency:
- Fluency in English (both written and oral); certification preferred for non-native speakers.
- Additional Considerations:
- Familiarity with NATO strategic priorities and threats.
- Eligibility for NATO SECRET security clearance is a plus.
Work Environment
- Primary work location is Norfolk, VA, with potential travel to Europe for workshops and conferences.
- Flexible arrangements, including virtual meetings and occasional on-site collaboration with HQ SACT.
